Does Illinois allow telehealth for medical cannabis certifications?
Yes. As of June 12, 2026, Illinois law (Public Act 104-0463) expressly states the required exam may be performed by remote means, including telemedicine — for first-time patients as well as renewals.
What conditions qualify for medical cannabis in Illinois?
Illinois recognizes 56 debilitating conditions, including chronic pain, migraines, PTSD, severe fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, epilepsy, and many more. Illinois also runs the Opioid Alternative Pilot Program: if you have a condition for which an opioid could be prescribed, you may qualify through that separate, faster lane.
How much does an Illinois medical cannabis card cost?
The IDPH registry fee is $50 for 1 year, $100 for 2 years, or $125 for 3 years. Veterans and SSI/SSDI recipients pay half. This is separate from the physician evaluation fee.
Is adult-use cannabis legal in Illinois? Why get a medical card?
Yes, adult-use has been legal since 2020 — but the medical card is one of the most valuable in the country: medical purchases are taxed at about 1% versus 20–35%+ for adult-use, and cardholders get higher possession limits and the right to grow up to 5 plants at home.
Can I buy before my physical card arrives?
Illinois typically grants provisional access when your completed application and fee are submitted, letting you purchase at your designated dispensary while the physical card is processed. Check your provisional-access letter for details.
