Maryland medical marijuana FAQ

Does Maryland allow telehealth for medical cannabis certifications?

Yes. Maryland regulation (COMAR 14.17.04.03) allows licensed providers to certify patients for medical cannabis via telehealth, including first-time patients. No in-person visit is required.

Is adult-use cannabis legal in Maryland?

Yes. Maryland legalized adult-use cannabis in July 2023. Medical patients still benefit from: 0% sales tax on medical purchases (adult-use purchases are taxed), higher possession limits, and access to medical-only products at licensed dispensaries.

How much does Maryland patient registration cost?

Nothing. Since July 1, 2024, patient registration with the Maryland Cannabis Administration is free and physical ID cards are optional — approved patients receive an electronic patient identification document by email. Registration is separate from the physician evaluation fee.

Do I need my patient card before I can buy medical cannabis?

You need an approved MCA patient registration and a valid written certification from a registered provider. Once both are in place, you can purchase at a licensed Maryland dispensary using your state-issued ID — a printed patient card is optional.
