  3. 3Return to the registry portal and pay the $50 annual fee. Patients on Medicaid, PACE/PACENET, CHIP, SNAP, or WIC may qualify for a $0 fee through the Medical Marijuana Assistance Program.

Does Pennsylvania allow telehealth for medical marijuana certifications?

Yes — permanently and by statute. Act 44 of 2021 amended Pennsylvania's Medical Marijuana Act to allow certifications by synchronous video visit, including for first-time patients. The physician must be Pennsylvania-licensed and registered with the PA Department of Health.

Is adult-use cannabis legal in Pennsylvania?

No. Pennsylvania is a medical-only state — a medical marijuana card is the only legal way for Pennsylvania residents to purchase cannabis. That also means the medical program remains the state's primary access path, with over 400,000 active patients.

How much does a Pennsylvania medical marijuana card cost?

The state charges $50 per year for the patient ID card, separate from the physician evaluation fee. Patients enrolled in Medicaid, PACE/PACENET, CHIP, SNAP, or WIC may qualify for a $0 state fee through the Medical Marijuana Assistance Program (MMAP).

How often do I need to renew my Pennsylvania certification?

Annually. You'll get an email from the registry about 30 days before your renewal is due; your physician recertifies you (telehealth is fine) and a new card is mailed once your annual payment is current.

Will I definitely get certified?

No one can promise that. Certification is the physician's independent medical determination, made after a complete real-time video examination and review of your records under Pennsylvania's standard. You pay for the visit and the physician's time — never for a guaranteed result.
