How Much Can You Save with a Washington State Medical Marijuana Card?

4 min read·Green Wellness Team·April 28, 2026

Washington State charges recreational cannabis buyers one of the highest tax rates in the country — a 37% excise tax on top of state and local sales taxes. Medical marijuana cardholders are fully exempt from these taxes on DOH-compliant products. This guide shows you exactly how to calculate your potential savings.

What taxes do medical cardholders avoid?

Washington medical cannabis cardholders registered in the WA DOH MMED database are exempt from:

  • 37% state cannabis excise tax
  • 6.5% Washington state sales tax
  • Local sales tax (0.85–4% depending on jurisdiction)

Total tax exemption: typically 44–47% of the total price depending on where in Washington you shop. This exemption is in effect through June 2029 under HB 1453.

Quick savings calculator

Use your monthly cannabis spending and local tax rate to estimate your annual savings:

  • $100/month recreational spending → ~$44–47 in taxes monthly → $528–$564/year in savings
  • $200/month → ~$88–94/month → $1,056–$1,128/year in savings
  • $300/month → ~$132–141/month → $1,584–$1,692/year in savings
  • $500/month → ~$220–235/month → $2,640–$2,820/year in savings

After subtracting the annual evaluation cost ($175 new, $140 renewal), the net savings for a $200/month spender are approximately $881–$953 in year one, and more in subsequent years.

How the exemption works at the dispensary

When you present your Washington DOH recognition card or show your registration status, licensed dispensaries are required to remove the tax from qualifying purchases. Not every product qualifies — products must meet WA DOH standards for medical-track products. Most mainstream flower, concentrates, tinctures, and edibles from licensed dispensaries qualify; your budtender can confirm specific items.

Note: you must be registered in the WA DOH MMED database (a free-to-register, $1 fee process) to receive the tax exemption. Your written authorization alone from a Green Wellness appointment is valid at dispensaries, but the tax exemption requires MMED registration. Read our DOH registration guide →

Local tax rates by city

Washington's combined recreational cannabis tax burden varies by jurisdiction:

  • Seattle/King County — 37% excise + 10.25% sales = 47.25% combined
  • Spokane/Spokane County — 37% excise + 8.9% sales = 45.9% combined
  • Olympia/Thurston County — 37% excise + 8.6% sales = 45.6% combined
  • Vancouver/Clark County — 37% excise + 7.7% sales = 44.7% combined
  • Lynnwood/Snohomish County — 37% excise + 10.6% sales = 47.6% combined

Home cultivation savings

Medical cardholders registered with the WA DOH can grow up to 6 cannabis plants at their primary residence. For patients who choose to cultivate, even a small home grow can produce a few ounces per harvest — eliminating dispensary purchases and their associated taxes for a portion of your consumption.

The $1 registration you can't skip

The only cost to access these tax savings beyond your evaluation is the Washington DOH MMED registration fee: $1. Registration takes about 10 minutes online at mmjr.doh.wa.gov. Upload your Green Wellness written authorization, a government ID, and pay $1. Your account is activated immediately; the physical recognition card arrives by mail in a few weeks.

Is the evaluation worth it?

For most regular cannabis users in Washington, yes — substantially. New patient evaluations are $175; renewals are $140. Patients spending $100/month or more on cannabis will typically recover the evaluation cost within 3–5 months of tax savings, and come out significantly ahead for the rest of the year.
