Washington State Medical Marijuana Qualifying Conditions (Full List)
Washington State's medical marijuana program covers a wide range of conditions under RCW 69.51A. Here's a comprehensive overview of qualifying conditions and what to expect at your evaluation.
Explicitly listed qualifying conditions
The following conditions are specifically recognized under Washington State law:
- Chronic pain — one of the most common reasons patients seek authorization
- PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) — extensive research supports cannabis for PTSD symptom management
- Cancer — including side effects of chemotherapy such as nausea, pain, and appetite loss
- Seizure disorders and epilepsy — CBD-dominant cannabis has shown particularly strong evidence
- Multiple sclerosis and muscle spasticity
- Crohn's disease and other inflammatory bowel conditions
- Glaucoma
- HIV/AIDS
- ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis)
- Parkinson's disease
- Hepatitis C
- Intractable pain — pain that hasn't responded to standard treatment
- Nausea and vomiting
The "any terminal or debilitating condition" clause
Beyond the explicit list, Washington law allows authorization for any terminal or debilitating condition where a licensed provider determines that medical cannabis may benefit the patient. (Note: anxiety on its own is not a Washington qualifying condition — PTSD is — though anxiety is often evaluated alongside PTSD and other qualifying conditions.)
Do I need to bring medical records?
Medical records are required. Washington State requires documentation of a qualifying condition before an authorization can be issued, and our physicians confirm eligibility by reviewing your existing records — diagnosis letters, lab results, specialist notes, or medication history from the provider who treats your condition. They cannot diagnose a qualifying condition at the visit itself. If you don't have copies of your records, our team will help you request them from your doctor before your appointment.
What if I'm not sure I qualify?
Book a consultation anyway. Our physicians give honest, individualized assessments. If medical cannabis isn't appropriate for your situation, they'll explain why and discuss alternatives. There's no pressure — your health comes first.
