What to Expect at Your Medical Marijuana Evaluation in Washington State

4 min read·Green Wellness Team·April 10, 2026

If you've never had a medical marijuana evaluation, it's natural to feel uncertain about what happens. The good news: it's a straightforward medical consultation, not an interrogation. Here's what the entire experience looks like — from the moment you book to walking out with your authorization.

Before your appointment

Once you book online, you'll receive a confirmation email with your appointment details and a link to complete a short health intake form. The intake covers your qualifying condition(s), current medications, and any relevant medical history. Completing it ahead of time means your evaluation moves faster.

You don't need to bring medical records (though they're helpful if you have them). What you do need:

  • A valid Washington State ID or driver's license
  • For telehealth: a device with a working camera and microphone, a private space, and a stable internet connection
  • For in-person: just yourself — arrive a few minutes early to check in

The evaluation itself

The appointment typically takes 15–30 minutes. Your provider will:

  1. Review the information you submitted in the intake form
  2. Ask about your condition — how long you've had it, what treatments you've tried, and how it affects your daily life
  3. Discuss how cannabis may help and answer any questions you have about use, dosing, or products
  4. Complete a brief physical or functional assessment if applicable
  5. Make a determination about whether a written authorization is appropriate for your situation

Providers take a supportive, judgment-free approach. There's no pressure and no wrong answers — the conversation is focused on understanding your health and whether cannabis can help.

Getting your authorization

If your provider determines you qualify, you receive a written authorization the same day — usually before you leave (or immediately after a telehealth call). The authorization is emailed to you as a PDF and is valid for one year from the date of evaluation.

You can use your authorization at any licensed Washington State dispensary immediately. You don't need to wait for DOH registration to make purchases (though registering unlocks tax exemptions and higher possession limits).

What if I don't qualify?

If a provider determines you don't currently qualify, you won't be charged. They may discuss alternative options or suggest follow-up steps. This is rare — Washington recognizes a broad range of qualifying conditions, and providers assess each patient individually.
