Can Washington State Medical Marijuana Patients Grow Their Own Cannabis?

3 min read·Green Wellness Team·April 30, 2026

One of the most significant benefits of Washington State's medical marijuana program — beyond tax savings — is the right to cultivate cannabis at home. Registered medical patients can grow up to 6 plants at their primary residence, something that recreational users are not permitted to do under Washington law.

Who can legally grow cannabis at home in Washington?

Only registered patients in the Washington State DOH MMED (Medical Marijuana Authorization Database) can legally cultivate cannabis plants at home. Simply having a written authorization from a physician is not enough — you must complete the DOH registration process (which costs $1 and takes about 10 minutes online) to receive home cultivation rights.

Recreational cannabis users in Washington are not permitted to grow at home. This is one of the clearest advantages of the medical program over simply buying recreationally.

How many plants can I grow?

Registered medical patients may grow up to 6 plants at their primary residence. There is no restriction on whether those plants are in the vegetative or flowering stage — all 6 count toward your limit regardless of size or growth stage.

What to know about home cultivation

  • Primary residence only — plants must be grown at the address listed with the WA DOH. You cannot grow at a vacation home, rental property, or a friend's house.
  • Out of public view — Washington law requires plants to not be visible from a public place without the use of binoculars, aircraft, or other visual aids. An enclosed garden, garage, or dedicated grow tent is common.
  • Out of reach of minors — plants must be kept in a locked enclosure or area not accessible to individuals under 21.
  • Landlord considerations — Washington law doesn't prohibit landlords from banning cultivation in lease agreements. Check your lease before growing, and consider renter's insurance implications.
  • No sale — home-grown cannabis is for personal medical use only. Selling, distributing, or even gifting home-grown cannabis outside of allowable sharing between registered patients is a felony.

What can you harvest from 6 plants?

Outdoor plants in Washington's climate can yield 1–8+ ounces per plant per harvest depending on variety, growing conditions, and experience. Indoor grows under artificial lighting typically produce 0.5–3 oz per plant per 60–90 day cycle. Many medical patients find that 6 plants — especially with a successful outdoor summer grow — can supply most or all of their annual cannabis needs, dramatically reducing or eliminating dispensary spending.

Registered possession limits

In addition to cultivation rights, registered patients have higher possession limits than recreational users:

  • 3 oz usable cannabis (vs. 1 oz recreational)
  • 48 oz solid cannabis-infused products (vs. 16 oz recreational)
  • 216 oz liquid cannabis-infused products (vs. 72 oz recreational)
  • 21 grams concentrate (vs. 7 grams recreational)
