Medical Marijuana for Anxiety in Washington State

5 min read·Green Wellness Team·May 5, 2026

Anxiety is one of the most common reasons Washington State residents seek a medical marijuana authorization. While Washington's statute doesn't list "anxiety" as a standalone qualifying condition, anxiety disorders qualify when they meet the threshold for a "terminal or debilitating condition" — which for moderate-to-severe anxiety that significantly impairs daily functioning, is well within reach.

Does anxiety qualify for medical marijuana in Washington?

Yes — for many patients. Washington's medical cannabis law (RCW 69.51A) allows authorization for any condition that is "terminal or debilitating" and where a licensed provider determines cannabis may benefit the patient. Anxiety disorders that limit daily functioning, disrupt sleep, or haven't responded adequately to conventional treatments regularly qualify. This includes:

  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • Social anxiety disorder
  • Panic disorder
  • Anxiety associated with PTSD (also a named qualifying condition)
  • Anxiety resulting from another qualifying condition (chronic pain, cancer, MS, etc.)

If you have a clinical anxiety diagnosis or a provider who has documented your anxiety, the path to authorization is straightforward. If you haven't formally been diagnosed, your Green Wellness provider will assess your reported symptoms and history.

How cannabis affects anxiety

The relationship between cannabis and anxiety is nuanced — which is exactly why professional guidance matters. At low doses, THC and CBD often produce calming effects. At higher doses, THC can increase anxiety in some individuals. Key mechanisms:

  • CBD — has well-documented anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties. A 2019 study in The Permanente Journal found CBD reduced anxiety scores in 79% of participants within the first month. CBD doesn't produce intoxication and is generally well tolerated.
  • THC at low doses — activates CB1 receptors in the amygdala (the brain's fear center), reducing threat response and producing relaxation. The dose matters significantly.
  • Balanced THC:CBD ratios — CBD moderates THC's potential to amplify anxiety, making balanced products a popular starting point for anxiety patients.

Washington's dispensary system gives medical patients access to a full range of products and potencies — including low-THC, high-CBD options that recreational customers may have limited access to at unendorsed stores.

What products work best for anxiety?

Your Green Wellness provider will give personalized guidance, but general approaches for anxiety include:

  • High-CBD, low-THC tinctures or capsules — for daily baseline anxiety management without intoxication
  • Balanced 1:1 THC:CBD products — for patients who want mild psychoactive effects with anxiety modulation
  • Fast-acting vaporized CBD or low-THC flower — for acute anxiety episodes where quick onset is needed
  • Indica-dominant products for evening use — for anxiety-related insomnia and rumination

Avoid high-THC products until you've established your individual tolerance — for anxiety patients especially, starting low and titrating up is essential.

What the evaluation looks like

New patient evaluations typically take 15–20 minutes. Your Green Wellness provider will ask about your anxiety history, symptoms, severity, and what treatments you've tried. You don't need to bring records, though a letter from a therapist or psychiatrist can be helpful. The evaluation is conversational — the goal is to understand your situation well enough to give honest guidance.

Same-day appointments are available at Green Wellness locations in Lynnwood, Spokane, Olympia, and Vancouver. Telehealth is available for returning patients renewing their authorization.
