Anxiety and Medical Cannabis Evaluations in Washington State
Anxiety on its own is not a Washington qualifying condition, but it is often evaluated alongside PTSD and other qualifying conditions. Learn how Washington's medical cannabis program works.
About Anxiety and Medical Cannabis in Washington and Medical Cannabis
Anxiety on its own is not one of the conditions enumerated in Washington's RCW 69.51A.010. It does not, by itself, qualify a patient for a medical cannabis authorization. However, anxiety very frequently accompanies PTSD — which IS a recognized qualifying condition under the statute — as well as other qualifying conditions such as cancer and HIV/AIDS. A licensed Washington physician evaluates each patient individually and considers the whole clinical picture, including any qualifying condition the patient may have.
Why Patients with Anxiety and Medical Cannabis in Washington Seek a Medical Cannabis Evaluation
Patients living with a qualifying condition such as PTSD often describe anxiety as one of their most disruptive symptoms. Many seek a medical cannabis evaluation to discuss additional options for managing the symptoms of their qualifying condition. Individual responses to cannabis vary, and some formulations can increase anxiety in some people. Your physician can discuss the current evidence, your specific qualifying condition, and what may be appropriate for you at your appointment.
This information is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Authorization requires an evaluation by a licensed Washington State physician who will determine whether medical cannabis is appropriate for your individual situation.
Medical Cardholders Save Up to 47% on Every Purchase
Under Washington's HB 1453 (effective June 2024–June 2029), patients with a valid medical authorization are exempt from the 37% cannabis excise taxplus local sales tax on qualifying DOH-compliant products. Depending on your county, that's up to 47% off every dispensary purchase.

What to Expect at Your Evaluation
Your physician will review your medical history, any qualifying condition you have, prior treatments, and current medications. You do not need a psychiatrist's referral. Because anxiety alone is not a Washington qualifying condition, your physician will determine whether you have a recognized qualifying condition — such as PTSD — under which your care can be evaluated. Each determination is made individually.
Common Questions About Anxiety and Medical Cannabis in Washington and Medical Cannabis
Does anxiety qualify for a medical cannabis card in Washington?
Not on its own. Anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, social anxiety, panic disorder, and OCD are not enumerated qualifying conditions under RCW 69.51A.010. Anxiety is, however, commonly evaluated alongside PTSD — a recognized qualifying condition — and other qualifying conditions. A licensed physician makes the individual determination.
I have anxiety and PTSD — can I be evaluated?
PTSD is one of Washington's named qualifying conditions. If you have PTSD, your physician can evaluate you on that basis and will consider your full symptom history, including anxiety, as part of the clinical picture.
I take SSRIs or benzodiazepines — can I still be evaluated?
Yes. Bring your full medication list and your physician will review potential interactions at your appointment.
Is my visit confidential?
Absolutely. Your evaluation is protected under HIPAA, Washington State's Patient Privacy Act, and RCW 69.51A privacy provisions. We do not share your information with employers, insurers, or law enforcement without your written consent.
