About Glaucoma and Medical Cannabis

Glaucoma is one of the original qualifying conditions in Washington's RCW 69.51A — and one of the most researched in cannabis medicine, with scientific interest dating to the 1970s. Washington patients with glaucoma who are exploring additional symptom management options may seek a medical marijuana evaluation with a licensed physician.

Why Patients with Glaucoma Seek a Medical Cannabis Evaluation

Cannabis and intraocular pressure have been the subject of research since early cannabis studies. The relationship between cannabinoids and eye pressure is one of the historically notable areas of cannabis pharmacology research. Your evaluating physician will discuss how this research applies to your specific glaucoma management situation and what role, if any, medical cannabis may appropriately play alongside your existing treatment.

This information is for educational purposes only and does not constitute medical advice. Authorization requires an evaluation by a licensed Washington State physician who will determine whether medical cannabis is appropriate for your individual situation.

What to Expect at Your Evaluation

Your glaucoma diagnosis from an ophthalmologist is your primary qualification. Bring records including recent IOP measurements and your current treatment regimen. Your physician will discuss cannabis as a potential adjunct to — not replacement for — your existing glaucoma care, and will advise on appropriate use in coordination with your eye care team.

What to bring: Valid Washington State ID or driver's license (required). Medical records related to your glaucoma are helpful but optional.

Common Questions About Glaucoma and Medical Cannabis

Will cannabis replace my glaucoma eye drops?

Medical cannabis is generally discussed as an adjunct approach, not a replacement for existing glaucoma therapy. Your ophthalmologist should remain your primary glaucoma care provider. Our physicians can advise on appropriate integration.

I have normal tension glaucoma — do I qualify?

Normal tension glaucoma (NTG) is a recognized form of glaucoma. Your physician will evaluate your specific situation.

Do I need a referral from my eye doctor?

No referral is needed, though bringing records from your ophthalmologist is helpful for a thorough evaluation.

How long does an authorization last?

A medical marijuana authorization in Washington is typically valid for one year, after which annual renewal is required.
